Photography by Julie Batteux: Portrait Josefa Schundau
Josefa Schundau's works are fed from an extensive archive, which works like a kind of sketchbook and includes photographic recordings of events, observations and personal encounters. For the not-yet-finished series of pictures “Mujer de Lejos” (2020), some of these photographs were removed from their original context and merged into a new narrative in which different temporalities, places and protagonists meet. In the nature and landscape shots as well as portraits of people from their immediate environment, she captures fleeting movements and moods, but also sensitive gestures. Accompanied by text fragments that refer to the associative and intuitive approach of the artist, the image motifs interweave to form a poetic story. In addition to photographic work, Josefa Schundau's artistic practice also includes sculptural and installation settings, which often revolve around transcendent states and transformation processes as well as the ambivalent relationship between natural external space and architecturally constructed internal space.
